Pneumococcal Vaccine

Synflorix pneumococcal vaccine is administered to infants and children six weeks to two years of age to protect against some types of bacteria called Streptoccus pneumoniae. This bacterium can cause illnesses such as meningitis, pneumonia, and blood infections. The Synflorix pneumococcal vaccine causes the body’s immune system to create antibodies against these diseases.

The vaccine contains the extracts from ten of the most common types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria and will not protect against other pneumoncoccal serogroups. Children with a compromised immune system may not receive full protection from the vaccine.

The vaccine dosage is age dependent.

For infants six weeks to six months the vaccination schedule consists of three doses of 0.5 ml at least one month between doses and a booster is recommended at least six months after the last dose.

For infants seven to eleven months the vaccine is given in two doses of 0.5 ml at least one month apart. A booster dose is recommended in the second year of life.

Children 12 months to 23 months should receive two 0.5 ml doses of the vaccine at least months between apart.
